"SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD" modern rules

Just downloaded this set of ultra low level skirmish rules from Wargames Vault , there's also a review of them in the latest Wargames Illustrated. The whole system on 2 sides of A4! Also included were some army lists/orbats at section level for Afghanistan/Iraq and the Falklands as well as other theatres. Not played them yet but looking forward to how it pans out, thoughts and AAR to follow.

  1. Yes, I bought this rules set on the back of that WI review and have been busy planning out forces and an opening scenario for my own troops of late. The only thing stopping me from getting troops onto the table in fact, is that I need to pick up some bases on Saturday, from the Stockton show. I'm counting down the days... ;)

  2. Interesting. From the cover I assumed these were aimed squarely at ultra-moderns. What's the recommend scale(s) and are there any basing conventions?

    1. The rules (as written) are using 28mm scale, but it states that for 15mm or less that the measurements (given in inches) should be converted to centimetres.

The rules state that they can be used for scales from 28mm to 6mm.

If it's any help to you (and Dougie doesn't object) I've written up a post with the full list of conflicts (currently, at time of writing) covered in the rules, here:

    2. Of course Roy no probs, your figures really need basing individually for this, its ultra low level so your looking at the relationship the individual soldiers have in their fireteams and squads. Hopefully I'll be doing a runthrough at the weekend.

  3. Thanks for the advice chaps. I notice there are lists for French Infantry Squads, so these may be the ideal rules for the ultra-modern Mali project which I intend to do at some point (not sure whether to go 1/72 or 15mm).

    1. Yes, on page four of the "Squad Lists: Afghanistan" document there is a French Infantry Squad, with an explanation on how to expand to create a platoon [three squads], including a platoon HQ, the anti-tank squad and the 8 -man vehicle crew.

A side note is offered stating how to convert the "Skills & Drills" stats to represent Chasseur, Parachute or Foreign Legion squads.

I make all this sound grander than it is. In reality, this squad list entry could be written out on the back of a postcard.

    2. I'd go for 20mm mate loeads more stuff available and remember these rules are fireteam/ squad level, be quite a small set up in 15mm ?

    3. Good point. Speaking of 20mm, I've long fancied Under Fire Minis' Chechen War stuff, but notice there aren't lists for that conflict in SCoaFF. Would it be difficult to mod 'em?

    4. Nope its very low level so your looking at fireteams which are fairly generic anyway, the sort of engagements it represents quite often result in your "big men" characters leading the small amount of troops who do the majority of the fighting.

  4. Anyone know where I can find the orbits/squad states for Afghanistan squad organisations ?
