Fireteam Modern 2020 edition by Rory Crabb

Folks, those of you that follow this blog will know that I play a lot of Modern games and I've probably got a copy of most sets. For quite a while now my goto set for modern (post WW2) games has been "Firefight Modern" by Rory Crabb. This system is aimed at Platoon level and plays very well. Any how Rory has decided to update it and so we have its latest incarnation, "Fireteam Modern 2020 edition".

For those who play the system the differences are as follows, Activation dice are removed and replaced with Activation pips. This speeds up play and gets rid of the occasions where you can't activate, especially with lower quality troops. At first I wasn't sure about this but I've played a game and it works well, if you're not keen on it you can simply keep the activation dice without issues.
The morale rules have been tidied up as well as close combat, more chance of the losers "bugging out" or surrendering rather than fighting to the last man which I always thought was slightly unrealistic.
The system has been broken up into the rules, army lists and a 4 sided QRS which is easier on the printer ink.
I've just played a small Falklands scenario using the rules and I'll post an AAR over the next few days.
In closing I really rate and like this system if Modern Post WW2 gaming at Platoon level is an interest you should really get these rules, they are available from wargames vault here's the link Fireteam Modern

"No End In Sight" rules and a small scenario

Been a while since my last post so here's an update on what I've been wargaming. Regular readers will know I've always been quite taken with the systems of Ivan Sorensen and his latest Cold War/Contemporary Platoon level system, "No End In Sight" is no exception. If you are at all interested in Cold War/Contemporary conflicts you need a copy of these rules. They are available to download at Wargames Vault, the link is below;
No End in Sight
If you like accurate results you'll love this system, gamers who prefer gameier sytems probably won't be as keen!
We played out a small scenario from the Force on Force Road to Baghdad book, "The Crown Jewel", which pits a USMC Squad in their LVTP7 executing a "coup de main" at an Iraqi Oil pumping station defended by a Ba'ath Party Death Squad and a unit of Saddam Fedayeen. On to the photos, scale is 20mm and the board's only3'x3' ! Dougie
The set up, the locked compound consists of a large admin building, the 2 pump houses are behind it. The Ba'athists start the game in the admin building and the Fedayeen are in the Palm grove, the USMC squad enters the table opposite the main gate. The Iraqi player needs to destroy the pump houses, The US player needs to prevent this.
The LVTP7 crashes the main gate the the marines deploy
The Fedayeen move towards the rear gate
After entering the compound the track comes under RPG fire luckily it missed!

End of the scenario, the Iraqis tried hard to blow the pump houses but the quality of the US forces showed, the stress mounted on both Iraqi units severely limiting their responses.

The game coped with the scenario well and NEIS is highly recommended!

Update, Salute, Ambush Alley and stuff for sale!

It's been a couple of weeks since my last post, due mainly to work on my house, decorators, joiners and the like causing chaos!
Salute was its usual high performing self and without a doubt the highpoint of the show for me was getting to play a pre-release version of "Fighting Season" the new adaptation of "Chain of Command" for Afghanistan and Iraq . The supplement is a collaboration between Rich Clarke and Leigh Neville, who is a friend of mine, and is due out in the summer.
I'm not intending to go into a long winded review of the rules, these are only a test version at the moment, but what I will say is that these are looking to be the system of choice for Afghanistan and Iraq at the platoon level. The collaboration was obviously worked really well, Rich Clarke is one of the leading tabletop wargame designers and Leigh Neville has the up to date military knowledge of systems, units, and tactics that give the feeling that your out there in the irrigation ditches and the heat!
A fuller review will be forthcoming when the rules are released. Its always good to regularly check the Lardies blog for up to date news, the links here, toofatlardies
On the gaming front I've been playing a little Ambush Alley again and the photos below are some recent additions to my 20mm setup. First up are a couple of contractors, figures are Liberation.
A container
A couple of skips
Some Cararama cars, including a repaint into an Iraqi taxi

On the painting front I've started doing some work for sale, the stuff below will be going on eBay very shortly but if you want to make a reasonable, sensible offer for any of the items get in touch. Dougie
The first is a Confederate artillery stand, this has been on eBay but there were a few issues with the buyer so its available again. 28mm by the Perrys when they worked for Foundry.

A group of 7 Renaissance gun crew, 28mm again by the Perrys when they worked at Foundry.

As I've said get in contact if any of these items interest you, I'll shortly be available for commission work, there'll be a full update on the blog when I kick off.

Some Corner of a Foreign Field AAR

This post has been delayed a while as I've been having a large amount of building work being carried out at Casa Robinson and although I'm retired I've had to give it my undivided attention rather than the figures!
Anyhow on the gaming front, while waiting with baited breath for the Afghan adaptation of Chain of Command from Too Fat Lardies,  me and Alex had a quick run through of the very cheap and very short "Some Corner of a Foreign Field" modern rules.

To set the scene Alex had a UK fire team located beside a small Hut and was tasked with cleaning a compound a short distance to his front. I had 2 local Talibs for hire in dish dash and AKs,

Here's a view of the table from my end, Abdul and Mohammed are in the foreground, the Brit fireteam is around the hut.

A closer view of Abdul, on the left and Mohammed in the crops on the right.

The Brit Fire Team starting the game, activating first.

The Brits opened fire and gave Abdul a light wound and 5 stress markers!

The fireteam Corporal and his oppo dashed to the wall of the compound the other 2 members hit Mohammed wounding him and giving multiple stress markers. When they were activated Abdul failed his morale and ran off behind the cover of the wall trying to stready his nerves. Mohammed ended up in the compound before failing an unconcious test and passing out!
Abdul, his nerves now steady, came back around the corner of the compound and was promptly cut down by the LMG. At this stage the Corporal and his oppo cleared the bodies and secured the compound.

A Brit victory, glory to Alex. The way the stress works I wasn't able to get a round off!!!

A very quick easy system that's fun, its obviously not in the same league as Skirmish Sangin, that regular readers will know I'm very keen on, but it is extremely cheap and very quick to play.

"SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD" modern rules

Just downloaded this set of ultra low level skirmish rules from Wargames Vault , there's also a review of them in the latest Wargames Illustrated. The whole system on 2 sides of A4! Also included were some army lists/orbats at section level for Afghanistan/Iraq and the Falklands as well as other theatres. Not played them yet but looking forward to how it pans out, thoughts and AAR to follow.

AAR Skirmish Sangin

Well the first Afghan engagement using Skirmish Sangin is under the belt and I'm impressed. The system is designed for 28mm figures, ultra low level with the ground scale equalling the figure scale so you have to be very careful calling in that support when the average table equates to about 100m x 100m!!!
My Afghan stuff is 20mm so it was easy enough to alter the rule distances. 1" = 2m for 28mm so you could go for 2cm = 2m or to simplefy it further 1cm = 2m, its up to you. Even in 28mm we're only looking at a 3' x 3' table.
The action took place on a 2' x 2' terrain tile with some compounds shoved on. As part of a larger engagement we had a 3PARA fire team engaged by 3 $10 Taliban. I'll apologise for the photos in advance as I haven't bothered to tidy them up. First off is a shot of the table, the Talibs wil be deploying at the small building where Abdul the goat is tethered underneath the Mulberry tree. The Brits are entering at the edge at the bottom of the shot.
The Brits deployed, although you can see the Talibs they're hidden and ain't been spotted yet.
Looking up the alley, possible dicker, is there any ICOM chatter?
The mobile's in use.
Terry kicks off the engagement missing but causing a morale check.
ICOM confirmed, an off table Brit sniper team takes out the dicker, the fire team skirmishes forward and the Tom with the UGL gets off a perfect shot killing one Talib seriously wounding a second.
At this point the fire team extracted off table, ENDEX!

I've purposely not gone in to all the rules but it played out very well, the system is detailed but quite elegant but if you have more than a couple of fireteams you're gonna need multiple players per side.
To reitterate if you're gaming Afghan buy these rules !!!
